No one explained why the otter was there either or how long it had been there by itself. I would love to be proved wrong as the animals didn’t appear distressed or unhealthy.īut when I asked why the goats were there I was told by the guide ‘they are no longer wanted for entertainment purposes’. Other animals are goats, pigs, one otter? Deer and a couple of zebra. It is essentially a petting zoo with parrots snakes and monkeys to be held for photographs which they try to sell you at the end. I can’t quite believe the animals are all rescue animals and even so the monkeys are still being kept in glass enclosures for their whole lives with long-standing signs outside suggesting they are not going to be moved again and indeed there is nowhere for them to go to that I could see. The cave tour was really good and well worth the extra $10. This is a lovely place to visit but I wish it was just the cenote pool and underground cave here and not the monkeys and other animals. Only reason for 4 not 5 stars.Īlso the mosquitoes are abundant so make sure you put on a strong repellent - I had on a natural repellent and still got ravaged. I only didn't complain then because the money is going to a good cause but that is extortionate and guests shouldn't be taken advantage of in that way. There is no way a fridge magnet should ever cost more than 5USD. This is in comparison to aprons costing 7USD and t shirts being 16USD. The only issue of the day was being charged 14USD for a fridge magnet. Communication with the sanctuary prior to our visit was also good. Return transportation was comfortable and quick. Could have watched the bats in the cave swoop around forever. Note - It is not a very deep Cenote so is good for those who aren't the strongest swimmers you can stand pretty much (I am 5'9 and it came to my chest standing) but you need to keep eyes out for rocks as the incline changes quickly and water shoes advisable. Thank you to the Aluxes for allowing us to witness and swim in the waters. Atziri again answered all my questions and told us the history of the Cenote giving it even more reverence and feeling culturally connected. Our visit was topped off with a swim in the Cenote, as it was just my husband and I, it was like a private swim. Some people in their reviews complain about using the animals for photo opportunities but when this is all they know it is understandable why they still need human interaction like this but it was made clear it was always on their terms and limited throughout the week. Felt especially sad for little Frida and glad she had somewhere she would be well supported. Atziri was knowledgeable and friendly throughout our experience and explained why some of the animals could not be returned to the wild either due to being an invasive species or because being treated as pets would leave them vulnerable in the wild.

Our stay at Ocean Breeze Akumal was a wonderful introduction to the Mayan Riviera.Akumal Monkey Sanctuary clearly works hard in trying to promote understanding of conservation and why the use of wild animals in the entertainment/pet industry should not be encouraged. We’ve now figured out how we can stay and avoid renting a car by using collectivos since it is a learning curve. We rented a car this year since it was our first time visiting this region and staying off resort. The A/C worked seamlessly and the Washer/Dryer unit in the suite was perfect. Listening to the birds sing and enjoying the tropical breezes in the morning and evening was a daily event. Hanging out on both our condo deck and the rooftop deck was incredibl e. To our surprise, new Tommy Bahama chairs were delivered to our condo a couple of days later. A surprising bonus was we shared how on our past trips to Maui, the condos always had beach chairs which were wonderful to have in the trunk of our rental car to use on beaches. Any time we contacted them, the response was immediate. Our hosts were wonderful throughout the whole process. It was great to have no unpleasant surprises upon entry - such a relief after a long day of travel. First of all, it is exactly as the pictures show. "We just returned to Canada from staying 6 weeks at this condo.
